The activities of AHPRA’s are regulated by Health Practitioner Regulation National Law which was implemented on 1 July 2010. 14 health professions are governed and regulated under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. These National Boards are supported by AHPRA under the Health Profession Agreement. MBA as with 13 other National Boards is responsible to regulate and maintain the relative health professions. The primary role and liability of MBA is to protect the public in relation to medical services offered by the professionals through stated standards and policies.  

Besides the above mentioned responsibility MBA is in charge of other functions which are listed below.  

 

MBA roles and responsibilities:

 

·         Registering national and international medical students and practitioners;

·         Revalidating the requirements of applicants who have applied to be registered under MBA;

·         Assessing and evaluating the skills and qualifications of international practitioner who wish to work in Australia;

·         Regulating, developing  and maintaining the practice of the professionals to ensure the safely appropriateness care of the patients;

·         Supervising the receipt, assessment of the applicants who were, are or already have registered as medical practitioners under the National Law or previous implemented laws; and

·         Supervising the receipt, assessment of registered medical students.

Skill Assessment Procedure for migration:

 

Overseas professionals that choose to pursue their career in Australia and migrate are needed to have their qualification and skills assessed with Australian standards. Applicants must meet the requirements and provide the required documents.

You are not required to be assessed.

Documents required:

 

·         Certificate or a degree, in original language and a certified copy of an official English translation, if applicable.

·        Certified copy of your identification.  

·         Official transcript, in original language and a certified copy of an official English translation, if applicable.  

·       Evidence of supervised teaching practice.

·         Evidence of membership, in the relevant association, if applicable.

·         Evidence of employment, from graduation to presernt.

·         Evidence of registration/ license, if applicable.

·         Assessment form, and

·         Evidence of English proficiency**.

 

 

** English proficiency, applicant who has acquired his/her qualification from a non-English speaking country, is required to sit for IELTS examination. It is essential to achieve a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).

The English proficiency test required for assessment is IELTs, however, other English examinations like TOFEL iBT may also be accepted by the  relevant authoritiy.

Assessment of overseas qualification is a complex and time consuming procedure. It may take up to 8 weeks for the process to take place. After completion of the assessment a Letter of Assessment is received by the applicant. The received qualification is useful to assist:

 

·         Migration officers to determine the suitability of the applicant for migration under the General Skilled Migration Categories;

·         Registration as a General Practitioner with MBA; and

·         Eligibility for relevant jobs.
