The University of Sydney

The University of Sydney is a public research university in Sydney, founded in 1850. Sydney University is a member of the prestigious Group of Eight, Academic Consortium 21, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning, the Australia-Africa Universities Network (AAUN), the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Worldwide Universities Network. There are 52,789 enrolled students including 33,505 undergraduate’s and 19,284 postgraduates’ students. There is around 3,000 administrative staff employed in the University. It is the second largest university of Australia, after Monash University.

 

The campus of the University has been ranked in top 10 of the world’s most beautiful universities by many publishers. The presence of hundreds of clubs, galleries, sport complexes and coffee shops has created a lively and dynamic environment for students and staffs. Furthermore, Honi Soit, the oldest student newspaper, was first published at University of Sydney in 1929.

 

Rankings

The 2014–15 QS World University Rankings placed the University of Sydney 37th and in the top 0.3% overall in the world. Additionally, it ranked Sydney as the 27th most reputable university in the world. Sydney is one of only 12 universities in the world to receive a "5 Star Plus" rating by QS based on criteria including "research, employability, teaching, facilities, internationalisation, innovation, specialist criteria and inclusiveness".

It is worth noting the University of Sydney Library is the largest academic libarary in the southern hemisphere. The library consists of seven individual libraries located across various campuses of the University. It holds about 5 million physical volumes and a further 300,000 e-book for a total of approximately 5.3 million items. The library holds some of the extremely rare and ancient items of Australia.
