Australasian Osteopathic Accreditation Council (AOAC)

Individuals are requested to have their qualifications assessed for eligibility to register and practice as osteopath in Australia.  Internationally qualified osteopaths may be qualified to practice in the country if they wish to migrate under General Skilled Migration Categories program. As with many other occupations, this assessing authority evaluates the overseas skills and knowledge of the applicant with Australian standards before issuing a statement. 

 

ANZOC roles and responsibilities:

 

·         Advising and recommending governmental bodies regarding the applicant’s skills for the purpose of migration;

·         Advising and recommending other regulatory bodies regarding the applicant’s eligibility for registration as an osteopaths;

·         Measuring the qualifications earned by the applicants for the purpose of registration;

·         Evaluating and accrediting programs offered by the educational bodies;

·         Assessing the qualifications and skills of overseas professionals who wish to practice in Australia; and

·         Developing and maintaining the relationship with national and international bodies with a similar role or responsibility as ANZOC.

Skill Assessment Procedure for migration:

 

Applicants, who wish to migrate to Australia under General Skilled Migration Categories programme, are requested to have their overseas qualifications assessed by the relevant assessing authority. Before seeking careers, international osteopaths are also required to be registered with Osteopathy Board of Australia (OBA).

 

There are two pathways for assessment for Skilled Migration:

 

·         Competent Authority Pathway

·         Standard Pathway

 

Competent Authority Pathway is suitable for international applicants, who have earned their qualifications from an accredited university and are currently registered as an osteopath with General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

 

Standard Pathway is available for overseas qualified osteopaths, who have completed their studies with a non-eligible program of study that is substantially equivalent to the Australian educational standards.

Documents required:

 

·         Certificate or a degree, in original language and a certified copy of an official English translation, if applicable.

·         Official transcript, in original language and a certified copy of an official English translation, if applicable.  

·         Thesis details, if have completed a thesis or dissertation as a part of the degree, certified copies of evidence must also be provided.

·         Evidence of membership, in the relevant association, if applicable.

·         Evidence of registration/ license, if applicable.

·         Assessment form, and

·         Evidence of English proficiency**.

 

 

 

** English proficiency, applicant who has acquired his/her qualification from a non-English speaking country, is required to sit for IELTS examination. It is essential to achieve a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).

The English proficiency test required for assessment is IELTs, however, other English examinations like TOFEL iBT may also be accepted by the  relevant authoritiy.

Assessment of overseas qualification is a complex and time consuming procedure. It may take up to 8 weeks for the process to take place. After completion of the assessment a letter and Statement of Osteopathy Qualification is received by the applicant. The received qualification is useful to assist:

 

·         Migration officers to determine the suitability of the applicant for migration under the General Skilled Migration Categories;

·         Registration as a osteaopath under Osteopathy Board of Australia;

·         Entry to accredited osteopathy courses; and

·         Eligibility for jobs an osteaopath.
