Australian Dental Council (ADC)

ADC was appointed as the regulatory body by the Dental Board of Australia. Prior to any activities, professionals are required to be registered with the body to be eligible to practice. Overseas professionals that wish to practice are required to be assessed before registration.

 

ADC roles and responsibilities:

 

·         Developing and maintaining the professional standards for dental programs of study;

·         Performing the responsibilities of an external body under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law;

·          Developing standards and procedures for assessment of overseas professionals;

·         Assessing programs that leads to registration of professionals;

·         Administering the conducts of overseas authorities that offer examinations for registration to practice as dental; and

·         Assessing the qualification and skills of overseas professionals that wish to register and practice their career in Australia.

Skill Assessment Procedure for migration:

 

ADC has been appointed to perform the activities of Dental Board of Australia under the provision of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009. Assessing the qualifications, knowledge and skills of the overseas professionals is one of the functions of this body.  

ADC provides two types of assessment. They are as follow:

 

·  Assessment of applicant’s educational background - qualification including testamur and transcripts, and professional standing.

·  Assessment by written and practical examination - evaluating the applicant’s knowledge, clinical judgment, attitudes and ethics.

 

Applicants are assessed against the standards of Australia. Not all applicants are required to take both of the above assessments.

You are not required to be assessed.

Documents required:

 

·         Certificate or a degree, in original language and a certified copy of an official English translation, if applicable.

·        Certified copy of your identification.  

·         Official transcript, in original language and a certified copy of an official English translation, if applicable.  

·       Evidence of supervised teaching practice.

·         Evidence of membership, in the relevant association, if applicable.

·         Evidence of employment, from graduation to presernt.

·         Evidence of registration/ license, if applicable.

·         Assessment form, and

·         Evidence of English proficiency**.

 

 

** English proficiency, applicant who has acquired his/her qualification from a non-English speaking country, is required to sit for IELTS examination. It is essential to achieve a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).

The English proficiency test required for assessment is IELTs, however, other English examinations like TOFEL iBT may also be accepted by the  relevant authority.

Assessment of overseas qualification is a complex and time consuming procedure. It may take up to 8 weeks for the process to take place. After completion of the assessment a Letter of Assessment is received by the applicant. The received qualification is useful to assist:

 

·         Migration officers to determine the suitability of the applicant for migration under the General Skilled Migration Categories;

·         Registration as a Dentist with ADC ; and

·         Eligibility for relevant jobs.

 

After completion of assessment procedure, applicants are required to undertake written and practical examiantions.
