James Cook University

James Cook University (JCU) is the second oldest university of Queensland, founded in 1961. JCU first offered their courses in Townsville, and since has grown in size and area. Today JCU has more than 16300 students, 4500 international scholars and 4337 employees. The University is located in the tropical cities of Australia, benefiting from a unique ecosystem and environment. The tropical rain forests of Savannas and algal reefs of Australia are famous enough to create distinct sceneries and attract international students. In general, the ecology of the North Queensland is different from other parts of the country and world.

The ‘Algal reefs’ and ‘rain forests’ of Queensland, are of two precious natural heritages of the world.

 

JCU has three campuses, located in Cairns and Townsville in Australia and one international campus in Singapore. Townsville is the largest and main campus of the University located on 386 hectares in the suburb of Douglas.  Douglas is on the north of Queensland State, and each year the city attracts millions of tourists to this city.

JCU has more than 20 prestigious research institutes, and is a member of Innovative Research Universities (IRU). Most of the researches are on four major themes:

·         Tropical ecosystem, conservation and climate change

·         Industries and economies in the tropics

·         People and Societies in the tropics, and

·         Tropical health, medicine and biosecurity

The University has invested substantially in structures and facilities to support research and development activity. As a result, research field stations have accommodated in different locations.

Rankings:

JCU has received an ‘above world standards’ ranking for research in fields of: materials engineering, immunology, tourism, biological science, agricultural and veterinary sciences and more. The university has been ranked continuously from 2010 as the top 400 academic universities worldwide.
