Australian National University
The Australian National University (ANU) is a public research university in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. It was founded in 1946 at the suburb of Acton. It is the only university to have been created by the Parliament of Australia. Moreover, the ANU is a member of Group of 8.
Today ANU has over 10000 enrolled undergraduates and 11,000 Postgraduates. Also about 3700 administrative staffs are employed at the University. It should be noted 30% of its students are international.
Life at the University campus is very dynamic and active. Theater halls, sports facilities and variety of coffee shops and clubs have created lively and energetic environment.
Rankings
ANU is consistently ranked among the world's top universities. In 2014, the university was placed 25th, 48th and 66th in the world by the QS, Times, and Shanghai rankings respectively. ANU is also consistently ranked 1st in Australia by all major university rankings.
Notable alumni
· Professor John Eccles, Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the Synapse.
· Howard Walter Florey, Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine received most of the credit for the discovery of penicillin.
· John Charles Harsanyi economist and Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences winner.
· Rolf M. Zinkernagel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996 for the discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells.
