Northern Territory (NT) is a federal Australian territory in the centre and central northern regions. This territory functions as a state but the Commonwealth Parliament can override the legislations passed by any other parliament. Henceforth, it does not benefit the rights of an independent state.
It is neighbour with Western Australia to the west, South Australia to the south. NT is bordered with Queensland on its east and to the north shares a border by the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is the 3rd largest state of Australia with over 1,349,129 square kilometer and population of 233,300, marking it as the least populated state of Australia. The Capital and largest city is Darwin. Most of the population is not concentrated in coastal region but rather along the Stuart Highway.
Northern Territory has two distinct climates zones, tropical and dry. On the north end of the territory the climate changes twice a year, creating two seasons, wet and dry, yet on the central region is the desert centre of Australia, receiving less than 250mm of rain in a year.
The economy of this territory is mainly focused on mining, which is concentrated on energy producing minerals, petroleum and energy. The largest exports of Northern Territory’s export are: Petroleum and natural gas, metal ores and concentrates, other manufacturing and agriculture. Another major industry of NT is tourism. The distinct and unique nature of this region such as Uluru and Kakadu make the Northern Territory is famous destination for national and international travellers.
