Most of its inhabitants reside in the Greater Hobart, which is part of metropolitan area of the state capital and largest city, Hobart. The total land area of this island is 68,401 square kilometer. It is promoted as a natural state, as 45% of Tasmania lies in reserve with many natural parks and World Heritage Sites.

The main economy of this state has been: mining (copper, zinc, tin and iron) agriculture, forestry and tourism. Tasmania is the only state that is separated from the mainland of Australia, and is the most mountainous state of the country. As a result most of central western part of the state is covered with Central Highlands (most mountainous region), and the midlands are located in central east, making it an ideal region for agriculture and farming activities.

Tasmania has 4 seasons; summers are from December to February with the average maximum sea temperature of 21 C and inland temperature of 24C. The temperature starts to fall from March and May welcoming autumn season and gradually take on the shape of winter patterns.
Winters are between June and August which are the wettest and coldest months of the State. The temperature reaches 12C on average. Nevertheless, inland areas freeze throughout the winter months. In the following months weather patterns begin to take the shape of spring followed by summer.
