The Australian National Flag
The colonies of Australia federated to become a single Commonwealth in 1901. That year, the flag was first flown. Australian Flag has three elements, the blue background, the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross.
The Union Jack in the upper left corner represents the history of British settlement. Underneath the Union Jack is a white Commonwealth or Federation star with seven points representing the unity of the 6 Australian states and territories.
Since the very early days of British Settlement the Southern Cross has been used to represent the constellation of five stars that can only been seen from the southern hemisphere, signifying Australia’s geography.
