Western Australia (WA) is the largest state of Australia, occupying the entire western third of Country. It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean to the north and west, the Great Bight and Southern Ocean to the south. On its north-east is the Northern Territory State and South Australia on its south-east. The total land area of Western Australia is 2,529,875 square km, making it the second largest country subdivision in the world. However, most part of the state is uninhabited, as 92% of the population resides in the south- west corner of the state. The capital and largest city of the state is Perth. It is the fourth most populous city of the Country, with estimated population of 2.02 million.
The main economy of this state is focused on extraction and processing of a diverse range of mineral and petroleum commodities. On the north west of the State is “Kimberley”, which is one of the nine regions of WA. The region is covered with steep-sided mountains. Another significant region of WA is “Pilbara”, which contributes significantly to the economy of the State due to its petroleum, natural gas and iron ore deposits. It is a large dry and thinly populated region in the north of the State. Large areas of the States have problems with dryland salinity and loss of fresh water, as a result majority of its population are scattered along the coastal regions. The southwest coastal area of WA has Mediterranean climate. It is heavily forested with one of tallest trees in the world named “Karri”.
2/3 of the state is aride and uninhabited. With an exception to Kimberley region that has monsoonal climate with the annual rainfall ranges from 500-1,500 millimeters a year.
